Purpose

The purpose of this submission was to provide feedback on how bus services funded by Environment Canterbury (ECAN) can be made more accessible and responsive to the needs of everyone, including disabled passengers. 

Summary of DPA submission

DPA recommended that driver training focuses on how drivers can lower buses at kerb side stops.  

DPA recommended that ECAN require electric bus operators to review safety issues around acceleration and braking on buses with a view to making improvements to support better passenger comfort and safety. 

DPA recommended the creation of regular service (10 minute) bus routes, especially into areas experiencing population and business growth. 

DPA recommended that bus services avoid the need for passengers to transfer between buses on route as much as possible, as this can create significant barriers for disabled people especially those with mobility impairment.
